"Staying Afloat" by Otto Penzler
Not sure if you caught Otto Penzler's article in Publishers Weekly June 2012 Issue about how TMBS competes with Amazon and other chains, but it's enlightening! You can read the full article here. Among other things, Otto discusses our Bibliomystery Series, as well as other measures we have taken to keep the shop up and running.
"Like many bookstores aboard the Titanic of independent bookselling, the Mysterious Bookshop hit the Amazon iceberg a few years ago. More accurately, it hit us, and we’ve been doing everything short of throwing women and children out of lifeboats, to avoid drowning in the icy waters of insolvency."
A true statement from our shop owner and captain. If you're interested on how we stay afloat, check out the article!
Do you have any ideas or opinions on brick and mortar indie bookshops?
Comments
A person such as Otto Penzler will never be replaced by artifical intelligence and “genius” apps in terms of depth of knowledge and personal involvement in his wares. For me, the score is always Penzler 1, iceberg 0.
