About Otto Penzler

 

Otto Penzler is the proprietor of The Mysterious Bookshop in New York City, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 13, 2009. He was the publisher of The Armchair Detective, the Edgar-winning quarterly journal devoted to the study of mystery and suspense fiction, for seventeen years. Mr. Penzler was the founder of The Mysterious Press, which he sold to Warner Books and recently reacquired; he also created the publishing firms of Otto Penzler Books and The Armchair Detective Library. He currently has imprints at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the United States and Atlantic Books in the U.K., publishing such authors as Thomas H. Cook, Andrew Klavan, Thomas Perry and Joyce Carol Oates. He also wrote a weekly column, "The Crime Scene," for The New York Sun, for five years.

In 1977, he won an Edgar Award for the Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection. The Mystery Writers of America gave him the prestigious Ellery Queen Award in1994 for his exceptional contributions to the publishing field. He was also honored with its highest non-writing award, the Raven, in 2003.

Mr. Penzler's most recent publications are The Lineup (Little, Brown), The Vampire Archives (Vintage), The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps (Vintage), The Vicious Circle and Uncertain Endings (Pegasus) and Dead Man’s Hand (Harcourt). Since 1997, he has been the Series Editor of The Best American Mystery Stories of the Year (Houghton Mifflin), featuring Guest Editors Robert B. Parker, Sue Grafton, Ed McBain, Donald E. Westlake, Lawrence Block, James Ellroy, Michael Connelly, Nelson DeMille, Joyce Carol Oates, Scott Turow, Carl Hiaasen, George Pelecanos, and Jeffery Deaver. He is also the co-Series Editor (with Thomas H. Cook) of the annual Best American Crime Reporting (Ecco/HarperCollins). Other mystery anthologies, containing all original stories, include Dangerous Women (femme fatale stories) and a series of seven sports-themed books, including Murder Is My Racquet, (tennis), Murderer's Row (baseball), Murder On the Ropes (boxing) and Murder in the Rough (golf); also Murder For Love, Murder For Revenge and Murder and Obsession (all Delacorte); and the Best American Mystery Stories of the Century, Guest Edited by Tony Hillerman. He wrote 101 Greatest Movies of Mystery and Suspense (ibooks and the Literary Guild).

He was born July 8, 1942.  He lives with his wife, Lisa Atkinson, in NY and CT.
